Amazing #FOSS is often held back by poor presentation. Creative professionals can play a big part solving that but why are there so few contributors with these skills and how do we change that? I explain at @socallinuxexpo: https://t.co/xQ1TS43AJT. In summary… (@ryangorley) 1/4 https://t.co/1kyHIE27E1

@socallinuxexpo @ryangorley We can reduce ignorance and bias by introducing #FOSS to future creatives when they are younger, by getting outside of our echo chambers to talk about how great it is, and by appreciating that some people are sensitive to aesthetics… (@ryangorley) 2/4

@socallinuxexpo @ryangorley We can eliminate the feature gap that prevents creatives from using #FOSS by making it easier to provide feedback, by changing the consumer mindset, and bolstering resources that help creatives find new ways to do what they need to do… (@ryangorley) 3/4

@socallinuxexpo @ryangorley We can interrupt the inertia of creatives doing things as they have by seizing upon disdain for coercive subscriptions, by appealing to ideals, and by moving beyond achieving parity to proprietary tools but instead innovating through user-oriented development. The most ambitious project by @FreehiveAgency has been The Journey to Thelio for @system76. It launch in 2018 and can still be experienced at: https://t.co/D0nvagITxr It embodies our shared passion for #FOSS, and is an allegorical journey through alien worlds… (@ryangorley) 1/6

@FreehiveAgency @system76 @ryangorley Lakmi is a world of hostility and distrust because the inhabitants are subject to artificial scarcity. Code is not an exhaustible resource that needs to be horded. It benefits all when shared freely at no loss to anyone else… (@ryangorley) 2/6 https://t.co/t2xz3UOs6j

@FreehiveAgency @system76 @ryangorley Beldura is a world where fear has created dependence and captivity. Free and open source software gives us visibility into process and code, and frees us from the control we’ve given to people who may not share our interests… (@ryangorley) 3/6 https://t.co/n2KTnVj8Hb

@FreehiveAgency @system76 @ryangorley Klo:luo is a world with the appearance of perfection, but at the great cost of diversity and independent thinking. Free and open source software is at times fragmented but in that fragmentation fosters diversity of thinking that can lead to innovation… (@ryangorley) 4/6 https://t.co/iV4JEDCxoz

@FreehiveAgency @system76 @ryangorley Thelio is a world free of hording, hostility, fear, manipulation and control. It is not perfect, but it is full of life, diversity, and innovation. It embodies what is possible with free and open source software… (@ryangorley) 5/6 https://t.co/2vyOhXT2r3

@FreehiveAgency @system76 @ryangorley It was an the incredible privilege to help @System76 launch their #Thelio desktop and to work with such talented people. Developers are vital to WHAT we create in free/open software. But when we consider WHO we’re making it for and WHY, so many other contributions become vital too. Don’t think because you can’t program you can’t make a meaningful difference in the world through #FOSS. (@ryangorley)

Some of us are better building things than making friends, but that doesn’t mean we don’t all need friends. I’m so grateful to those who have been friends to me in #FOSS, who have remembered me as a person on the other end of an internet connection. (@ryangorley) 1/4

@ryangorley I can’t list all the people at @inkscape who welcomed me in, without programming skills, who have suffered from my naivete and faults, but who have been patient, kind, forgiving, and encouraging. These people choose regularly to be friends. (@ryangorley) 2/4

@ryangorley @inkscape At @socallinuxexpo @LinuxAppSummit & @guadec I’ve met many others who have become and remained friends. The pandemic hasn’t been kind to in-person #FOSS gatherings, but they are a great place to meet, share with, and support others. (@ryangorley) 3/4

@ryangorley @inkscape @socallinuxexpo @LinuxAppSummit @guadec My plea is that we remember #FOSS isn’t solely a technical effort. Code is re-written, features are depricated, but people remain. If you lift people and be a friend your impact will be far reaching and deeply rewarding. (@ryangorley) 4/4
