Hi! Thanks for inviting me to curate this account. Join me for a week of not-quite-random musings about FOSS and associated things.

Happy World Creativity and Innovation Day! Creativity and innovation are essential for harnessing the economic potential of everyone. What are some of the creative and innovative ways you see FOSS advancing your communities? #WCID

Keeping a household free of Apple and Windows devices have been an interesting challenge for my kids. They’ve been good-natured about it though. One has taken to using @Krita_Painting for creating digital works of art while the other is following @Blender tutorials.

Happy Earth Day! I am reminded of this article I read last year by @jimfhall. A good reminder that FOSS allows us multiple ways to be kinder to the Earth. https://t.co/IXWCm2bx7G

I just registered for #GUADEC. You can too! Sign up here => https://t.co/objXeDyoQ1
I am so excited to see what everyone has been working on this past year, to catch up with all the wonderful GNOME folks, and to meet new people! (including you!)

Happy World Book Day! This year’s theme is sharing a story, so I thought I would tell you about my first programming book. I had gotten it from a Scholastic book fair and was so excited to bring it home and try it on my home computer.
(1/7) -@annasor
Apr 23, 2021
@annasor I think it was called Beginning Basic and was full of sample programs. I carefully leafed through the book to find the first program I wanted to try. So many possibilities!
(2/7) -@annasor
Apr 23, 2021
@annasor I had learned some Basic in school already, so I didn’t think of myself as a rank beginner. The simple programs in the beginning I bypassed as too easy. I could do better than that!
(3/7) -@annasor
Apr 23, 2021
@annasor I found the program I wanted. It was a little complicated, and I spent an afternoon entering it into my computer. I wasn’t very good at typing yet, so it took longer than it probably should.
(4/7) -@annasor
Apr 23, 2021
@annasor When I finally finished, I was ready for my program to do it’s magic! With great anticipation, I ran it and… it crashed.
(5/7) -@annasor
Apr 23, 2021
@annasor Worse yet, I realized I hadn’t saved any of my work. I was so frustrated! But I learned my lesson: save early, save often.
(6/7) -@annasor
Apr 23, 2021
@annasor Thankfully, I didn’t give up, thought I also learned to take smaller steps. I loved that book so much I still have it somewhere. What book did you read at a young age that got you excited about something you still enjoy today?

Another reason to attend #GUADEC2021! I find Jim’s #usability talks utterly fascinating. Oftentimes the results may seem like common sense, but because we are so deeply involved in the process and have the weight of what came before, we can’t see the forest for the trees. https://t.co/qnPFtc50fO

Just to reiterate, supportive communities are awesome communities! https://t.co/Htfy4D8GAZ

Let’s start a thread with random trivia and thoughts about AisleRiot!
-@annasor https://t.co/VChbVNSJDs
Apr 24, 2021
@annasor I haven’t done any coding in years. The last major code I wrote was a labor of love that I worked on with my now-husband (or ex-fiancé, as we sometimes joke). We made AisleRiot, the solitaire suite for GNOME. I wonder how many person-hours these games have helped fill?
-@annasor https://t.co/diDguwJxjM
Apr 24, 2021
@annasor As y’all may already have realized, AisleRiot is an anagram of Solitaire. #WordNerd
-@annasor https://t.co/Yz5nOfBpQn
Apr 24, 2021
@annasor When AisleRiot was written, scheme (guile) was the official scripting language of GNOME. Not many applications actually adopted it though. Thanks to @andywingo for keeping it going!
-@annasor
Apr 24, 2021
@annasor @andywingo One of my favorite solitaire games is a game my aunt taught me. There weren’t any other kids around that summer and I spent a lot of time playing it. Unfortunately she never told me the name.
-@annasor https://t.co/5LuVXGxUjL
Apr 24, 2021
@annasor When I added it into AisleRiot, I couldn’t find the game listed in any of my sources. I was in the middle of reading the Mars Trilogy by Kim Stanley Robinson at that time and named the game Odessa after the city in the book.
-@annasor
Apr 24, 2021
@annasor After adding a slew of games, I decided to come up with one of my own. I used the fact that one of the suits is also a sought after mineral to come up with the game Diamond Mine.
-@annasor https://t.co/omIGbJPv6w
Apr 24, 2021
@annasor Diamond Mine is a fun game that has you excavating through the stacks of to find all the diamonds — and collect them in the right order, of course! Bonus points for being cleaning up after yourself.
-@annasor https://t.co/lLsV8fWx3G
Apr 24, 2021
@annasor I cut my teeth in FOSS with AisleRiot. I learned how to use makefiles, use cvs, build GNOME from scratch, write docs, even create graphics (poorly). It makes me smile every time I see it being played.
-@annasor
Apr 24, 2021
@annasor My kids learned to program by creating their own games in AisleRiot.
-@annasor
Apr 24, 2021
@annasor Much love and thanks to the current maintainers. I’m glad to see AisleRiot is still alive and well!

Happy World Penguin Day! I’m wearing my penguin t-shirt from @MontereyAq. I can’t wait until I can visit the penguins there again in person. When travel opens up more, I really want to visit the ones in @NEAQ again — their penguin exhibit is amazing! #TeamRockhopper -@annasor https://t.co/acGwHUvL2v

I attended our monthly GNOME engagement meeting this morning, run by the amazing @KristiProgri. Great to see new folks there! We invite new folks to the Engagement team because it gives great insight into many areas.
How do other FOSS projects plan for newcomers?
@annasor
Apr 27, 2021
I’m fascinated to see the results of this poll. Obviously we all put our information where we expect folks to look for it, but unless we all have the same shared experience, that is likely to differ from reality.

So many interesting talks for folks both technical and non-technical. If you’re interested in FOSS (which, well, you’re here, right?) you should definitely take a look and register for #GUADEC2021!

Early this month, GNOME announced the winners of our inaugural Community Education Challenge. If you missed it, the video is here: https://t.co/kd9Y4etXyX
Congratulations again to our winner @opensourcesib and our runner-up @openuk_uk!
Such inspiring projects! ❤️
-@annasor
Apr 28, 2021
@opensourcesib @openuk_uk @annasor The premise of the GNOME Community Engagement Challenge was to connect the next generation of coders to the FOSS community, keeping them involved for years to come. Both @opensourcesib ’s and @openuk_uk ’s submissions did just that. I’m excited to see what they do next!
