Please welcome Jan Ainali, @Jan_Ainali Codebase Steward @PublicCodenet

June 23 to 30 on @imakefoss

Interview: https://t.co/MsfoRhyp9e

@imakefoss is a rotation curation account, a blog and a YouTube channel. https://t.co/8HgoEhlKEp

@Jan_Ainali @publiccodenet Hi all! Really looking forward to this week! I’ve some experience from curator accounts from before, most notably the @sweden account in 2016: https://t.co/Pf6PByCev4 Let’s see if this week can get as lively as that was!

Jun 23, 2021

@Jan_Ainali @publiccodenet @sweden In a way it’s quite fitting that I, who am working at @publiccodenet, am taking over this account on this exact day, because today is the UN Public Service day: https://t.co/HIGg9gTpNd

Jun 23, 2021

@Jan_Ainali @publiccodenet @sweden (Oh my, only the second tweet and already managed to tweet from wrong (my own) account. Perhaps I should temporarily change that profile image…)

Jun 23, 2021

@Jan_Ainali @publiccodenet @sweden (If you think that you should do something to “celebrate the value and virtue of public service to the community” you can start by improving that @Wikipedia article. (I’ll come back to more about Wikipedia later.))

Jun 23, 2021

@Jan_Ainali @publiccodenet @sweden @Wikipedia How did I know it was the UN Public Service day today? Not because I know all UN days, but thanks to my good friend @AlbinPC Larsson that wrote a @wikidata SPARQL query for upcoming awareness days. See: https://t.co/1k8U8GKY58

Jun 23, 2021

So what’s going on in my work? This morning we had our weekly planning meeting for all codebase stewards in our team. In these meetings @alba_roza, @eric_herman, @felixfassen and I go through what we had planned for last week and what we will do next one.

  • @Jan_Ainali

Jun 23, 2021

@Alba_Roza @Eric_Herman @Jan_Ainali We follow the structure of: the codebases we already steward (our focus), new codebases to research, meta questions, communication and documenting learnings.

Jun 23, 2021

@Alba_Roza @Eric_Herman @Jan_Ainali This is of course guided by the overarching plans and priorities for the entire organization. And the result is communicated to the rest of the team in the end of the day when we have our all hands weekly forward look which is an important meeting for us to sync up.

Jun 23, 2021

@Alba_Roza @Eric_Herman @Jan_Ainali ‘But wait a minute!" I hear you say. “Codebase stewards and stewarding codebases? These are unfamiliar terms to me. What is that?”

Glad you asked! Here is our introduction to stewardship: https://t.co/7iwYw8DWHT

Jun 23, 2021

@Alba_Roza @Eric_Herman @Jan_Ainali If you want to dive into the nitty gritty, here is how we have documented codebase stewardship for ourselves: https://t.co/aAaUAiTJCo

Jun 23, 2021

@Alba_Roza @Eric_Herman @Jan_Ainali I say for ourselves, but it’s open to everyone to read, learn from and reuse (scroll down for the lovely CC0 mark in the footer). In fact, we don’t really have an intranet, but publish all our processes in the open on the site https://t.co/gWditBiUnH

Jun 23, 2021

@Alba_Roza @Eric_Herman @Jan_Ainali We strive to be a radically open organization, and I hope that we can show this during the week. And it all stems from our cultural values, defined keys to success and communication principles.

https://t.co/kMtd7iqzDQ https://t.co/8BNc81PMWR https://t.co/iQpDca7579

Jun 23, 2021

@Alba_Roza @Eric_Herman @Jan_Ainali These values and principles, which is upheld by my wonderful colleagues, makes me very proud to work at @publiccodenet

Jun 23, 2021

@Jan_Ainali The #SWEPOL hashtag might also cause unexpected meetings on Twitter today since there is also an ongoing political crisis in Sweden. There was a historic vote of no confidence, ousting the prime minister earlier this week: https://t.co/YVI3i7QaPZ

Tonight I’ll be recording @Wikipediapodden, a weekly podcast about Wikipedia in Swedish. We record it live streamed and then I edit it an audio version. If you know Swedish, watch us on Twitch around 18.30 UTC https://t.co/ncbiN1KWKx

  • @Jan_Ainali

Jun 23, 2021

@wikipediapodden @Jan_Ainali But I have recorded some special episodes in English too. These are interviews on important topics or around special events. If you are curious, checkout https://t.co/p5eQeDPTcN

Jun 23, 2021

@wikipediapodden @Jan_Ainali If you watch, notice the intro countdown sequence that is made with a small script my colleague @felixfaassen created for our podcast Let’s talk about public code. We call the script Bumperscripter and here is the repository: https://t.co/dL35GmffuC

Jun 23, 2021

@wikipediapodden @Jan_Ainali @felixfaassen If you decide to use it we would be thrilled if you would ping us with a link. We’re thinking about adding a showcase section to the readme, but so far it’s sort of only our own shows. https://t.co/gtK5s1Wday

Jun 23, 2021

@wikipediapodden @Jan_Ainali @felixfaassen You can find our podcast Let’s talk about public code at https://t.co/4zt6AKESzw Our next episode is coming up on July 6 when we will talk with @maukoquiroga from @OpenFisca #ltapc

Jun 23, 2021

@wikipediapodden @Jan_Ainali @felixfaassen @maukoquiroga @OpenFisca That one will also be recorded live, so if you want to watch you should subscribe to our Youtube channel at https://t.co/cqHEGn1SUi

We usually plan our episodes in GitHub, here is how it looks for the upcoming one: https://t.co/dUVYXBn2OL

Jun 23, 2021

@wikipediapodden @Jan_Ainali @felixfaassen @maukoquiroga @OpenFisca For Wikipediapodden we use @mediawiki instead of Github. @wikimediase graciously let us use their wiki to plan the episode, like the one tonight: https://t.co/o5MKGwAJ2a

Jun 23, 2021

@wikipediapodden @Jan_Ainali @felixfaassen @maukoquiroga @OpenFisca @mediawiki @WikimediaSE I also want to thank @wikimediase for some grants we got that covers hosting of the podcast, a pro account on @streamyardapp and long loans on some equipment from their tech pool: https://t.co/HERiOXstVI

Jun 23, 2021

@wikipediapodden @Jan_Ainali @felixfaassen @maukoquiroga @OpenFisca @mediawiki @WikimediaSE @streamyardapp For both podcasts I use @getaudacity to edit. I must say that I love having a very capable editing software at my hands when doing it.

Even so, recording and editing take the most part of the evening and by midnight I can usually publish it.

Jun 23, 2021

@wikipediapodden @Jan_Ainali @felixfaassen @maukoquiroga @OpenFisca @mediawiki @WikimediaSE @streamyardapp @getaudacity The final step after editing is to upload it to https://t.co/deWbqjcrmr (which is a simple Wordpress site with the Blubrry PowerPress podcast plugin) and to @wikicommons.

Okay, that’s the process. Now I should go prepare our show..

Jun 23, 2021

@Jan_Ainali Pew, that was a bit too exciting. #SWEPOL 3-2 Going into to the podcast recording all too hyped! How can an episode on free licenses live up too this?

Jun 23, 2021

@wikipediapodden @Jan_Ainali @felixfaassen @maukoquiroga @OpenFisca @mediawiki @WikimediaSE @streamyardapp @getaudacity @WikiCommons Finally done, a bit earlier than usual. Sorry for the Swedish :) https://t.co/kPBw8lJYH6

Jun 24, 2021

@Jan_Ainali My favourites are (1/2 ) @LingLibre_WMFr which is a super easy way to record pronunciations of words for use in Wikidata and Wiktionary (or elsewhere really due to free licenses). Starts at 11.30 UTC https://t.co/fGry9awduA

Jun 24, 2021

@Jan_Ainali @LingLibre_WMFr The other one (2/2) is @wikifunctionsi (a.k.a. Abstract Wikipedia), which will be a way to write articles in a language neutral way with help of functions, which then can be rendered to any language! This keynote starts at 16.00 UTC

Oh, and good morning! We usually start our days at @publiccodenet with a virtual coffee machine / tea kettle. It’s nice when working remotely to just see some friendly faces in the morning. We host our own @Jitsinews instance and I can really recommend that.

  • @jan_ainali

Jun 24, 2021

@publiccodenet @jitsinews @Jan_Ainali Then we do a quick daystart with the entire team. We just state our top priority/focus/mindset for the day. It’s a way to share what we are doing, kind of a stand-up, but very brief. We have tried many styles but it is easy to get bogged down in details.

Jun 24, 2021

@publiccodenet @jitsinews @Jan_Ainali Following that, the codebase stewards go to into a more traditional stand-up where we briefly mention what we achieved yesterday, what we’ll focus on today and highlight if we are blocked on anything. (If you forgot about stewards: https://t.co/NUsJn1tv7u )

Jun 24, 2021

@publiccodenet @jitsinews @Jan_Ainali Talking about Jitsi, we developed an app to be able to have a dedicated server for our communities, without risking it being overused. It’s a sign up module extended from a version @AmirSarabadanii created for Wikimedia https://t.co/igNpfyVHGB

Today we send out invitations to our community call for the Standard for Public Code that we will have on Thursday next week. If you want one, sign up quickly at https://t.co/uMGpe0Rb45

#StandardforPublicCode

  • @Jan_Ainali

Jun 24, 2021

@Jan_Ainali The Standard for Public Code (found at https://t.co/3dXLAkFvEA ) is perhaps our most important tool. It’s a collection of good practices when developing public code that enable successful future reuse by similar public organizations in other places.

Jun 24, 2021

@Jan_Ainali Our community calls is a way to communicate with low friction. Some people like mailing lists, some like to write issues in Github, some like to chat face to face. Some issues also lend themselves well to an open discussion instead of text.

Jun 24, 2021

@Jan_Ainali In the call coming up, we want to discuss how the standard refer to policy vs. code. Since it covers #PublicCode we want it to be inclusive and understandable for developers and policymakers alike and still be clear about the connection. Draft agenda: https://t.co/Cv5cmtZ7hD

This afternoon we will discuss the publiccode.yml standard to a few interested parties. This specification allows storing metadata about #publiccode codebases, which makes it possible to create directories of these. https://t.co/pJtDdJaMmh

  • @Jan_Ainali

Jun 24, 2021

@Jan_Ainali This is already in use, most prominently by @developersITA in Italy, to create a directory of codebases produced by and for public organizations. https://t.co/Ar2BebLWbd

Jun 24, 2021

@Jan_Ainali @developersITA It should be pretty easy to create a file for your codebase based on that documentation. But to make it even easier, the Italians made an editor for it: https://t.co/AlojaL3C5A

Jun 24, 2021

@Jan_Ainali @developersITA We believe that having a file like this is a good way to share metadata about your codebase. So good that we even made having one a SHOULD requirement in the Standard for Public Code. https://t.co/OxiNZCuKRK

Jun 25, 2021

@Jan_Ainali A hasty translation: The cold of midsummer night is severe, the wind, the bitter and fog. Everyone dances in the homestead until midnight. Drunkards walks their silent path, cheek game under pine and spruce, the moon shines white on the buttocks. Every single one bathes naked.

@Jan_Ainali First of all: FLOSS Weekly. @flossweekly is an institution with an enormous archive. I’ve learnt so much from this podcast. https://t.co/iy2BsemIJL

Jun 25, 2021

@Jan_Ainali @FLOSSWeekly One that really goes into the licensing in detail: FOSS North. @fossnorth never fail to deliver on the legal technicalities. https://t.co/xkQjSu8Kae

@Jan_Ainali @inkscape The logo comes in a number of variations, and has a longer story and you can find both the variations and the explanation here: https://t.co/dpq2UGyl6C

In two hours @AlbinPCLarsson and I will be editing @Wikidata live focusing on languages #ArcticKnot https://t.co/PjoeI7rZAo I’ll be creating lexemes derived from other languages and connect them.

This is one of my more successful (and fun) twitter bots. It tweets when someone edits from the Swedish Parliament without logging in (which makes the IP address public). Here’s a recent hilarious example, adding a day for cakes. https://t.co/AKJoyADdDp

Jun 27, 2021

It’s of course inspired by @parliamentedits which also uses a more sophisticated method than mine does. Where I simply use the RSS-feed and IFTTT, this has its own repository: https://t.co/0SdOsC4kJr

Jun 27, 2021

@parliamentedits IFTTT is also used for @nyligenavlidna which tweets when someone’s article gets added to the category for people deceased in this year. This has notified my early, because Wikipedians is on top of this kind of news. Eg. else I would have missed McAfee: https://t.co/VEfitatXSq

Jun 27, 2021

@parliamentedits @nyligenavlidna Unfortunately IFTTT recently changed to only allow 3 free recipes, which hampered the usefulness of @SveWikipedia which had a number of ‘news feeds" around Swedish Wikipedia set up.

Did you know about the ‘Journal of Open Source Software"? It’s a “is a developer friendly, open access journal for research software packages” and I think this idea of @JOSS_TheOJ is great. https://t.co/sKoyGKtVt3

A pretty cool #FOSS IMHO is Credit my cc by @Lokal_Profil at @WikimediaSE which aims to make it easier for you to complain when someone is not complying with the licenses of your images. https://t.co/AXntSWyEgB

  • @Jan_Ainali

Jun 29, 2021

@Lokal_Profil @WikimediaSE @Jan_Ainali It’s specifically targeted for images in @WikiCommons, but the template it generates could be adapted for any free image. Set your mood in a slider from 😃 to 🐵 and out pops an email. Easy peasy!

Jun 29, 2021

@Lokal_Profil @WikimediaSE @Jan_Ainali @WikiCommons Unfortunately it’s a bit stuck since it hasn’t implemented i18n yet, it’s only in Swedish. Some translations has already been submitted, so people want it in more languages. If you can, please help out! https://t.co/WVYyAVgeNR

Jun 30, 2021

@josp0001 @Jan_Ainali Well, the short answer is that you don’t need to replicate our structure in other countries, if that was what you meant. We aim to be global and public organizations outside of the Netherlands are more than welcome to become a member.

Jun 30, 2021

@josp0001 @Jan_Ainali I guess the answer is different if you are referring to #publiccode in general or @publiccodenet as an organization. The former of course must be financed by public money, either by procurement or by developing internally (or it is by definition not public code).

Jun 30, 2021

@josp0001 @Jan_Ainali @publiccodenet Yes, so our idea of financial model is here: https://t.co/qAJGGPupim And as you can see from our annual report all initial funds was philanthropic as a ‘kick-start’. However, long term we aim to be publicly funded: https://t.co/AqbnfeEzjs
