Hi everyone! This is @cybette, your host at @imakefoss for the next 7 days.

I’m very fortunate to work for an amazing #opensource company, so I’ll probably talk about different projects that I’ve been involved with at @redhat. Plus previous jobs, plus things outside of work.

Aug 26, 2020

So, where shall I start? I’ve been around long enough to tell you that I’m barely scratching the surface when it comes #FOSS knowledge and experience. (The more you know, the more you realize you don’t know.) However by sharing different pieces of the scratched surfaces, …

Aug 26, 2020

…we can create beautiful #FOSS patchworks of our projects and communities for all to see and learn.

Over the next week, I welcome you to join in with questions, discussions, and your experiences/views!

As I’m based in #Finland, let’s see some cool open technologies that have originated from here.

This one just had a birthday yesterday: #Linux. Happy 29th!

@Linus__Torvalds started developing what would become the ubiquitous Linux kernel in 1991, at the University of #Helsinki.

Aug 26, 2020

Are you on #IRC (Internet Relay Chat)? (@cybette raises hand) - if yes, which client do you use?

Thanks to Jarkko Oikarinen who wrote the first IRC server & client in 1988 at University of #Oulu, some of us will always use it to stay connected 😆 https://t.co/UKJAsoiPHx https://t.co/GDkYc5o1af

Aug 26, 2020

@cybette Speaking of connections, especially secure ones, we cannot do without #SSH (Secure Shell).

Tatu Ylönen @tjssh designed the first version of the protocol in 1995 at Helsinki University of Technology.

#Finnish universities must be doing something right! :)

I used screen+irssi for years. Since last year I’ve switched to @RiotChat (now @element_hq) with IRC-Matrix bridge.

@matrixdotorg is an open standard for #decentralised secure communication. It’s #FOSS, it’s federated, it’s great! I’m there as @cybette:https://t.co/yUmtwWlcRN

I would be remiss if I don’t mention the main project in my job - @ansible!

I’m reminded of a time back in Singapore (this was a long time ago, in the mid-90s) when I volunteered to teach an ‘Internet 101" class at the School for the Deaf. They were delighted with the possibilities of email and IRC for more direct, non-voice communications.

Aug 31, 2020

What do you use to manage your #passwords?

I use @Bitwarden across multiple devices. With apps for major desktop & mobile OSes + browser extensions and even a #commandline tool, you can easily and securely access your vault from anywhere.

@Bitwarden #Bitwarden is #opensource, provides end-to-end AES-256 bit encryption, has a bug bounty program, and gets regular security audits.

You can even self-host it if you prefer more control of your data.
